Anime Review: Kara no Kyoukai: Garden of Sinners, Chapter 1: Overlooking View (俯瞰風景)

Over the years, Type Moon has slowly made its way from anime obscurity into proverbial limelight. With animes such as Fate Stay Night quickly becoming instant hits with anime fans around the world, producing an almost limitless amount of both authorized and unauthorized third-party goods, it’s no wonder this once-doujin group has quickly made itself into the archetype for quality and unique storytelling. Aside from games and their anime renditions, Type Moon is less known for the line of books it has published under its name. One of these books, also one of the first works Type Moon writer Kinoko Nasu ever published, Kara no Kyoukai (Borderline of/to Emptiness), has recently been made into a series of seven movies, one for each chapter of the novel. The first movie, has recently been released on DVD in Japan (and the second and third will be released by the time this article is published), quickly reaching 2nd place on the Oricon DVD charts (first among anime DVDs). With the DVD obviously selling like hotcakes, comparisons between the movie and book are all but inevitable.

Giving Classic Titles a Chance (Old)

With the rise in the digital age and the vast increase in anime entering this country, it seems discouraging to me that many newer Otaku shy away from older series. Obviously many of these fans have never seen much beyond what has been available on US TV; broadcast, cable, or satellite; and as Cartoon Network has stated rating are key. And it is known that ratings for dated looking shows are lower than more contemporary looking shows. For example Cartoon Network never finished airing (either time they attempted airing the show) the original Mobile Suit Gundam series, but did show all of Dragonball Z. Obviously this is not the best example, as both are actually older series (would it surprise most people that Dragonball Z is over ten years old) and Dragonball Z is far less plot oriented than Gundam, and in all honest looks more recently made. The problem is that age does not mean a show is worse than a more contemporary title.

Anime Review: Ultra Maniac

Ultra Maniac centers around two best friends, Ayu and Nina. Nina, a cute but incompetent witch, has come from her magical world to “study abroad” in Japan. While flying on her magical scooter, looking for her new home, she crashes into Ayu, and from that point onward, the two become best friends. Ayu, who outwardly seems cool and calm, is actually extremely insecure and overdramatic. Mix in Nina’s tendency to mess up every wish Ayu makes, and well, you can predict the rest.

Koushirou Saeki is a lonely 28 year-old wedding planner. After his girlfriend breaks-up with him, he begins to question whether he is even capable of loving someone from “the bottom of his heart.” One day, while taking the subway, he sees a girl in a high school uniform unknowingly drop her ID. Being your typical good guy, he picks it up and runs after her to return it. The girl, Nanoka Kohinata, turns out to be his 16 year-old sister whom he has no memory of. Because of her new school, Nanoka is moving out from her mother’s house to live with the old brother she’s only heard of and her father. Although Koushirou knows that Nanoka is his sister, he can’t stop his increasing obsession over her as each day passes. Will Koushirou be able to control his emotions? Or will they get the best of him?

In the past year, many different types of anime have reached the shores of America. I, myself has seen more than my fair share of these anime for better or worse and I have taken a particular interest in one of the lesser known genres. The dating sim anime, as it is known today, struck me as something of an oddity amidst the sea of cliché that I firmly believed to have permeated this foreign entertainment medium. These anime provided new stories and fresh ideas, and for me, a feeling of hope from the imaginary depression commonly associated with the fall from the “Golden Age of Anime,” also known as the late 80’s to early 90’s. And so, as a way for me to show my fandom, I write what I hope to be a semi comprehensive guide and narrative to this budding genre. Please keep in mind, this is being written with little to no official research done on the topic, and many of my statements are based on subjective observations.
